The bunker hatch clanged open against the concrete wall.

Elena Voss stepped onto the iron stairs, carrying a black flight case. She wore a dark wool coat and kept both arms pinned across her chest until she reached the table.

“Richard authorized the sweep five minutes ago,” Elena said.

She slid a silver flash drive across the steel desk toward Thomas. Thomas plugged it into the console. The amber monitor split into two rectangular image panels.

Daniel leaned over the desk.

The left panel showed his own sixth-grade school portrait from 1994, taken in Portland. The right panel showed an identical face under a fluorescent clinic strip, dated fifteen years later. The label read Subject 0B: Gabriel Mercer, Age 11.

Gabriel stepped closer. His throat worked as he stared at the two boyish faces.

“That is not me,” Gabriel whispered. “My name is Daniel.”

“Open the medical annex,” Elena told Thomas.

Thomas clicked a key. Documents scrolled across the screen: blood types, neural mapping runs, and audio files stamped with Richard Voss’s signature. One intake slip from 2009 listed a mother’s signature: Anna Mercer.

Gabriel touched the glass over his own childhood photo. His fingers left a smear.

“He told me my mother died in the terminal fire,” Gabriel said.

“She died in hospice in Denver,” Elena said. “Richard forged your custody order to build a biometric clone.”

Gabriel backed away from the desk until his shoulders hit the concrete pillar. The certainty drained from his eyes. He rubbed his left forearm where a medical port scar showed beneath his rolled sleeve.

The wall timer chimed. Nine minutes remained before the master server locked all external access.

“How do we kill it?” Daniel asked.

Thomas turned from the terminal, his hands trembling. “You cannot destroy the predictive engine by fighting its code. It feeds on your record. It wins because Daniel Cross exists in four thousand government registries.”

“What does that mean?” Claire asked from the doorway.

“The Cross Protocol,” Thomas said. He pulled up a dual-lock prompt on the monitor. “Daniel must erase his entire digital life. You become nobody. A ghost.”

Red numbers blinked down on the glass terminal: 00:34.
