The iron latch behind the core yielded with a dull clank. Thomas led the way into a narrow vault where tape drives spun behind wire cages.

The air held the scent of motor oil and cold paper. Three steel desks stood beneath ceiling bulbs that flickered against the damp brick.

“Richard wanted predictive models,” Thomas said, resting his hand on a gray cabinet. “He thought human memory was a flaw to correct.”

Daniel rubbed the scar over his eyebrow. His silver watch ticked in the quiet.

“You kept the originals,” Daniel said.

“An engineer checks his stress points,” Thomas replied. His trembling fingers typed a sequence into a keyboard. “Look twice, always.”

Green text populated the curved screen. Twenty-three passenger names scrolled down the column, each linked to flight vouchers, tax records, and childhood addresses. Mrs. Gable’s lost luggage claim from 1998 sat beside receipts for her daughter’s wedding dress.

“Every life he tried to copy,” Elena said. She checked the codes against her tablet. “It is all intact. Every line of genuine data.”

Gabriel remained by the door frame. His hands hung limp at his sides, devoid of the calm arrogance he had worn an hour before.

“What about me?” Gabriel asked. “Am I just code in his script?”

Thomas opened a low drawer and lifted a worn paper folder. He turned toward the young man and offered it.

“You were born in St. Jude’s clinic in 1994,” Thomas said gently. “Your mother was Anna Mercer.”

Gabriel took the folder. The paper shook against his knuckles.

“Gabriel Mercer,” Daniel said quietly.

The young man opened the cover and stared at a footprint stamped on yellowed cardstock. A quiet breath left his chest.

“I have a name,” Gabriel whispered.

“You have a beginning,” Daniel said. “The rest belongs to you.”

Daniel turned toward the metal stairs that led back up to the concourse. Above them, morning flights were already preparing to board.
