Sixteen Years Below the Grid
Airline Agent Tore Passenger’s Ticket at Check-In—Then the Airport System Displayed His Clearance · Capítulo 6
The bunker smelled of diesel exhaust and old machine oil. Behind an iron cage, a 1950s auxiliary generator chugged with a low, rhythmic vibration that vibrated through the concrete slab.
A man with shock-white hair sat bent over a green CRT monitor. His weathered fingers trembled as they rested against the keycaps.
Daniel stopped five paces away. He rubbed the small scar over his right eyebrow.
“You never scuffed your heels,” the man said without turning. “Always checking stress points.”
“Sixteen years,” Daniel said.
Thomas Cross turned on the steel swivel stool. His skin had the chalky tint of underground living, but his blue eyes remained sharp.
“Sixteen years below the grid,” Thomas said. “To keep Voss away from you.”
“You left me alone,” Daniel said. “The silence hurt worse than any threat.”
“I know,” Thomas said quietly. He rubbed his grease-stained thumbs together. “Richard Voss wanted living templates for synthetic identities.”
“He wiped your credentials at Gate 41,” Daniel said.
“To force the master code,” Thomas said. “I vanished to protect the bypass.”
“He used my clearance card this morning,” Daniel said.
“Not just your clearance,” Thomas said. He pointed toward a secondary monitor. “He cloned you.”
Robert stepped through the armored hatchway behind them, jaw clenched tight. “Director, we have a feed spike.”
An amber beacon bolted to the concrete ceiling spun into motion. A sharp alarm tone cut through the thrum of the generator.
Across the CRT display, green text strobed in jagged block lines:
PHASE THREE AUTHORIZATION EXECUTED
ORIGIN: EXECUTIVE OPERATIONS
USER CLEARANCE: DANIEL CROSS
Thomas pushed back from the terminal, his gaze fixed on the flashing screen. “Gabriel is taking the main hub.”
