Months later, the rain had stopped, but the glass halls still held the cold.

Daniel stood in the line at Counter 17 with an untouched paper coupon in his hand. The new terminal sat in the same place, but the desk had been swapped out, the corner chipped, the acrylic divider gone. Maya, the agent on duty, wore her hair back with no hard twist to it. She looked up when he stepped forward and gave him a plain nod.

“Good morning. Destination?”

“San Diego.”

She held out her hand. “May I see your ticket?”

He placed the coupon on the counter. One edge was creased from his pocket, nothing more.

Maya scanned the barcode, then the stamp seal.

“Everything checks,” she said.

That was all.

No sigh. No performance score. No little show for the people behind him. She printed the baggage slip, folded it once, and slid it across with the ticket.

Daniel took it and felt the paper’s weight in two fingers.

Behind him, a businessman cleared his throat. A child asked for juice. The desk kept moving.

Maya glanced at the name on the screen. “Mr. Cross, gate change to B12. You’ve got twenty minutes.”

He almost smiled at that. “Thank you.”

She tapped the counter twice with a pen. “Have a good flight.”

He did not hurry. He walked into the concourse with the ticket in his pocket and the baggage slip in his hand.

Near the seating row by the windows, he paused long enough to look back at the queue. Mrs. Gable sat there with a cane across her lap, her new voucher in a clear sleeve, waiting for her son to come through security. A student with a frayed backpack stood beside her, checking his phone and grinning at some good news. Their faces carried no fear of the desk.

Daniel rubbed the scar above his eyebrow once, then let his hand fall.

Above him, a departure screen refreshed. Somewhere in the archive room below the terminal, a log line updated without fanfare.
