The Voice Outside the Door
Airline Agent Tore Passenger’s Ticket at Check-In—Then the Airport System Displayed His Clearance · Capítulo 5
Heavy boots crunched on glass in the corridor outside the steel door.
Claire backed against a cabinet, her acrylic nails scraping the cold paint. Robert stepped in front of her, his jaw wet with sweat.
A knock echoed against the iron frame. Three slow thumps.
“Daniel,” a voice called through the grille.
Daniel froze. The voice was his own. The pitch, the quiet pause between words, the flat edge—it matched the sound in his head when he spoke.
“Open the hatch, Daniel,” the voice said from the dark hallway. “We have schedules to keep.”
“That is you,” Claire whispered, her voice shaking. “How are you out there?”
Daniel rubbed the small scar above his right eyebrow. His watch ticked against his wrist. He did not answer. He grabbed the frame of an oak cabinet and pulled. Heavy hinges groaned as the cabinet swung open, revealing a dark shaft with iron ladder rungs anchored in concrete.
“Down,” Daniel said.
Robert pushed Claire through the gap first. Her heels clattered on the metal rungs as she descended into the draft. Robert followed, his belt radio clinking against the wall. Daniel stepped into the shaft, pulled the cabinet shut, and descended twenty feet into a drainage tunnel.
The smell of old fuel hung in the chilly air. Water trickled along a concrete channel underfoot. Daniel led them fifty yards through the gloom until the tunnel opened into a vaulted bunker lit by green lamps.
Four CRT monitors glowed on a steel workstation in the center of the subterranean room. Cables ran from the floor plates into the terminal racks.
Daniel approached the central desk. One screen displayed a black-and-white feed from the main concourse above.
On the monitor, Counter 17 was clear of passengers. A man in a dark coat stood at the desk. He reached over the ledge, reached into the plastic bin, and pulled out four torn pieces of paper.
The camera caught his face as he straightened. The man possessed Daniel’s high jawline, dark hair, and the pale scar above his right eyebrow.
