Daniel stepped around Gabriel and approached the steel console at the center of Gate 17. The primary terminal screen flashed yellow, displaying a prompt: REQUIRE SYSTEM PROOF.

Richard Voss lunged forward, but Gabriel placed one broad hand on Richard’s shoulder, holding the man in place. Richard rotated his gold signet ring frantically, his breath rattling in his throat.

“You cannot override sixteen years of balance,” Richard said. “The network requires a template.”

Daniel rubbed the scar above his right eyebrow. He reached out and touched the mechanical keyboard, his fingers cool against the plastic keys.

“A template predicts,” Daniel said. “A person chooses.”

He typed six letters into the command line: M-E-M-O-R-Y.

The screen flickered. A second prompt replaced the first: REQUIRE ORIGIN DATA.

Daniel did not enter a serial code or an executive key. He typed four letters: S-E-L-F.

The glass housing beneath the desk hummed. Cooling fans whined as internal relays clicked in sequence. Across the monitor, lines of blue code stopped scrolling, replaced by white text that filled the screen line by line:
RECOGNIZED: UNPREDICTABLE INPUT.
OVERRIDE APPROVED BY SUBJECT.

The server array emitted a low chime. Smoke rose from the ventilation grid as the identity database purged its active files. The primary screen went dark, then flared white before shutting off entirely.

Around them, the emergency floodlights flickered and died. Above their heads, fluorescent panels hummed back to life, casting white light across the tiled floor.

Two police officers pulled open the glass doors, their sidearms drawn. Robert Kline stepped into the room behind them, holding steel handcuffs.

“Richard Voss,” Robert said. “You are under arrest for unauthorized system sabotage.”

Robert snapped the steel cuffs over Richard’s wrists. Richard said nothing, staring at the dead screen as officers led him away.

Daniel checked his silver watch. The digital countdown was gone.
