Richard Voss rotated the gold signet ring on his pinky finger. Behind him, the circular core server spun with a steady click of magnetic heads.

“You have forty seconds, Agent Donovan,” Voss said. He turned a black tablet toward Claire. “Sign the operational release.”

On the screen, a kitchen table sat under harsh fluorescent light. Claire’s brother sat between two men in gray windbreakers, staring blankly ahead.

Claire took one step toward the glass desk. Her fingers gripped the edge of the metal frame until her knuckles went white.

“System authorization requires two terminal overrides,” Voss said, his tone measured and dry. “Daniel erased his. Yours will suffice.”

“Leave him out of this,” Claire whispered.

“Touch the pad, Claire.”

Daniel watched her shoulders drop. He did not move; any sudden step would bring the armed guards’ muzzles up.

Claire leaned close to the glass screen. Her gaze fixed on her brother’s right hand resting against the Formica table. The fingers twitched, tapped twice, and formed a tight three-finger sign against his thumb.

She blinked. A faint breath left her parted lips.

“That sweater,” Claire said.

Voss raised an eyebrow. “What about it?”

“He lost that wool sweater at a rest stop in June,” she said. She lifted her chin, meeting Voss’s gray eyes. “You pulled that tape from four months ago.”

Voss did not blink. “The threat remains genuine.”

“No,” Claire said. “Policy dictates I verify live feeds. I refuse consent.”

Voss’s jaw hardened. He turned to the man standing beside Daniel. “Gabriel. Take her thumb. Press it to the sensor.”

Gabriel Mercer did not move. His hand rested inside his dark coat, his fingers wrapped around the printed clinic file from 2011.

“Gabriel,” Voss repeated, louder now. “You are the template now. Obey.”

Gabriel drew his service weapon. He took two slow steps forward, clearing Daniel’s shoulder. The barrel did not point at Claire. He raised the black steel and aimed it directly between Richard Voss’s eyes.

“My name is Mercer,” Gabriel said.
