Mike came home at 4:12 and knew something was wrong before he reached the mailbox.

The first thing he saw was new blacktop where there had been gravel that morning. The second was the fence—six feet of matte black bars—cutting across the back pad like someone had drawn a ruler through his yard. His trailer sat inside it, locked behind a gate with a shiny brass latch.

He killed the truck, climbed out, and stood still.

The air smelled like hot asphalt and wet grass. Fresh stone was scattered along the edge in a neat spill. He took three steps, then stopped at the corner post and looked down at the line. Not his line. A clean, hard edge ran ten feet onto his side, all the way down toward the back.

He crossed to the trailer and rattled the gate. It held. His hand stayed on the cold bars a second too long.

“Son of a—”

He cut the rest off and reached for his phone. No photos yet. Frank’s voice came up in his head before he could argue with it: Pictures first. Words later.

He walked the strip slow, filming with the phone held chest-high. The new asphalt bridged into the Prescotts’ driveway like it had always belonged there. Their crew had stamped it smooth, right over the place where his gravel had been. A bobcat track still curved through the damp edge. On the far end, the fence turned and ended at a corner post sunk into what had been his pad.

He stopped at the end, turned, and filmed back toward his own house. The work looked finished. It looked legal to anybody who didn’t know a line from a guess.

Kate came out the side door, saw his face, and folded her arms.

“They did it.”

“Yes.”

“On a weekday. Nice of them.”

Ben appeared behind her, peering around her elbow. “Is that our trailer?”

“It was,” Mike said.

Maddie came out last, phone already in hand. “You want me to keep recording?”

“Stay by the house,” he said. “All of you.”

He took one more photo of the gate, the fence, the fresh blacktop, and the trailer trapped behind it. Then he turned and walked next door.

Brandon answered after a long minute, wearing a golf shirt and a smile that tried to pass for concern.

“Mike. Didn’t expect you home yet.”

“Move the fence.”

Brandon glanced past him, then back. “We had a survey done. The line’s been clarified.”

“I can see what you had done.”

“It’s cleaner now. We’re trying to maintain the property.”

Mike held up his phone. “You paved my land.”

Brandon’s smile stayed put. “If you have an issue, get a lawyer. That’s the sensible path.”

Behind him, Kayla called from inside, “What’s going on?”

Brandon didn’t answer her. He just kept his eyes on Mike and said, “I wouldn’t touch anything without advice.”

Mike nodded once.

Then he turned back toward his truck, already counting the next step, and the next, while his trailer sat chained behind somebody else’s fence.
