Maddie spotted the dumpster first.

It sat on the strip of grass beside Mike’s apron, orange lid open, a red ribbon of caution tape fluttering from one corner. The Prescotts had placed it so close to the gravel that one wheel nearly kissed the edge.

Mike set his coffee on the truck bed and stared at it.

“Tell me that’s on their side,” Kate said from the porch, arms folded over a laundry basket.

“It isn’t.”

He walked out with his hands in his pockets, measuring by eye the way he always did. The dumpster blocked the view from his garage to the street. A tape measure lay across the hood of Brandon’s SUV, one end hooked to a stake in the ground like someone had marked a seam in the earth.

Brandon came over from next door with that neat smile that never reached his eyes. “Just doing some planning. We’re trying to keep things clean.”

“On my land?” Mike said.

Brandon glanced at the dumpster, then back. “There’s some ambiguity on the edge. Better to be proactive.”

“Move it.”

“It’s temporary.”

Maddie, by the screen door, lifted her phone and took a picture.

That evening, Ben counted the tape marks with his shoes. “Why is he measuring our mailbox?”

“Because he likes his numbers in other people’s business,” Kate said, carrying in a basket of sheets.

Mike took the yardstick from the shed and checked the line again. Brandon’s stake was six inches onto the gravel. The mailbox post, the apron, the run to the garage — all of it sat where it had always sat.

Still, the next morning there was fresh tape on the ground, and a little white flag tied to the corner of the Prescotts’ new sod. By noon, a crew had laid boards over Mike’s apron so the dumpster could be dragged out without tearing the grass.

Maddie watched from the window. “They’re making it look like they own the walk.”

“They’re making it look like they can make it look that way,” Kate said.

That night Mike called his father. Frank listened, then said, “A man can talk around a line all he wants. The ground doesn’t move. Walk it. Find the iron.”

Mike looked through the kitchen at the dark yard. Then he nodded once.

“Okay,” he said. “Saturday.”
