John created a folder on his desktop labeled Evidence and dragged fourteen MP4 files into it. Beside his keyboard sat a legal pad listing delivery numbers, carrier timestamps, and the exact minutes of Sophia’s walks down his front path. He printed six pages of screenshots and clipped them into a navy blue binder.

He drove to the precinct on Thursday afternoon and laid the binder on the front counter. Officer Vance flipped through the pages, pulled up two video files on a desktop monitor, and leaned back in his squeaky vinyl chair.

“We can take another report, Mr. Davis,” Vance said, rubbing his chin. “But without footage of her opening the boxes and keeping the contents, her husband will call it neighborhood parcel collection. She already told the Chief she brings exposed packages indoors for safekeeping.”

“She took my daughter’s winter boots,” John said. “And my neighbor’s heart medication.”

“I’m just telling you how the DA looks at a low-level property complaint,” Vance replied, handing the binder back. “It’s still a civil board dispute until we prove intent.”

That evening, John stood in his kitchen, watching through the blinds. Three houses down, Sophia was bending over her flower bed in a bright yellow windbreaker. She stood up, wiped her gardening gloves on her pants, and looked straight at John’s house. She lifted one hand in a short, mocking wave, a slow smirk across her face before she turned back to her roses. She knew he had gone to the station. She knew no one was coming to stop her.

John put his glass in the sink. The clink of glass on porcelain sounded loud in the quiet house. Official channels were dead ends. The board was her rubber stamp, and the police were bound by procedural technicalities. As long as she played the polite neighbor, she could steal with impunity.

He walked into the office and sat down at his desk. He closed the spreadsheet and opened a fresh browser window. He didn’t search for local ordinances or police codes this time. He typed four words into the bar: anti theft package deterrents.

If the system wouldn’t mark her, he would build something that did.
