Soft Lines

They Stole My Driveway – So I Gave Them a Parking Lesson They’d Never Forget · Capítulo 4

Then came the party.

Mike came home from a dump run to find a silver sedan nosed in along his apron, half its back end over the gravel he used to swing the trailer. Music thumped through the open door next door. Kate stood at the sink with her arms folded and looked out the window.

“Tell me that’s not on your side,” she said.

Mike set his keys down. He looked once at the wheel, once at the property pins by the hedge.

“It is.”

He walked over before he had time to think better of it. Brandon opened the door with a drink in one hand and that tight, showroom smile.

“Good evening, Mike.”

“That car’s on my driveway.”

Brandon turned his head toward it as if noticing a vase had been moved. “We’re just having a few people over.”

“Move it.”

Brandon gave a small shrug. “It’s temporary. The line here is a little soft until we get the final landscape work done.”

Mike looked at him. “There’s no soft line.”

Kayla appeared behind him, phone in hand, bright earrings catching the porch light. “Oh, hi. Are you the neighbor? It’ll be gone in an hour.”

Mike held her eyes. “It needs to move now.”

She smiled like he had asked for a favor at a bank window. “You know how guests are.”

He went back home, got the tape from the truck, and walked the apron in front of both houses. Brandon followed him to the edge of the porch.

“You don’t need to make this weird,” Brandon said.

Mike stopped at the pin and looked down. “Weird is parking on my ground.”

Brandon’s smile thinned. “We’re all trying to be good neighbors here.”

“Then have your people park on your side.”

The next morning, two orange cones sat on Mike’s gravel, set four feet inside his line. No one had asked. No one had called.

Mike stood there with his coffee, then carried them across the actual line and placed them on the Prescotts’ fresh sod, heel-to-toe.

From the kitchen window, Maddie said, “He really did that?”

Kate didn’t look up from the laundry basket. “Your father has always had a gift for delivery.”

Mike watched Brandon open his blinds across the way and stand still for a beat too long.

The pressure had changed shape. It was no longer a party mistake. It was a map.
