The metal folding chairs in the clubhouse basement squeaked as eighty people squeezed into a room built for forty. Sophia sat behind the long plastic table, her hands tucked deep into the pockets of a beige trench coat despite the room’s heat. Her hair was pulled back tightly, but foundation couldn’t hide the faint violet smudge along her jawline where she had tried to scrub the dye away.

“This whole gathering is an illegal lynch mob,” Robert said, standing beside her in a dark suit. He tapped a leather binder against the tabletop. “My client—my wife—was the victim of a booby trap. A chemical attack on private property.”

Mrs. Langford cleared her throat into the microphone. The screech of feedback cut him off. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the notebook in front of her.

“Robert, sit down,” Mrs. Langford said. “You’re not on the board, and this isn’t a courtroom.”

Sophia leaned toward the microphone. She pulled one hand from her pocket to adjust the neck of her shirt, and the room went dead silent. Her fingers were stained deep plum right down to the cuticles, the nail beds ringed in dark indigo.

“What happened Tuesday was a childish prank,” Sophia said, her voice dropping into her practiced, reasonable tone. “A targeted campaign meant to undermine the safety oversight this board provides. I was securing suspect packages for community safety.”

“You were taking my grandson’s boots,” Mrs. Chen said from the second row. She stood up, holding a stack of delivery receipts against her cardigan. “And my heart medication.”

A murmur rippled through the rows of folding chairs.

“That’s enough,” Mrs. Langford said, raising a hand. She looked down the table at the four other board members. “We’ve all seen the porch footage provided by Mr. Davis. We’ve seen the timestamped video from Tuesday morning. I’m calling for an immediate vote of no confidence regarding President Sophia Wilson.”

“You can’t do that without a thirty-day notice!” Robert shouted.

“Read section four of the bylaws,” Mrs. Langford said. “We can.”

She raised her hand first. Beside her, the treasurer raised his. Then the secretary, and finally the vice president. Across the room, dozens of arms shot into the air.

Sophia stood up so fast her chair clattered against the wall. She grabbed her leather bag, her purple-stained fingers gripping the strap. Under the buzzing fluorescent lights, the dye on her skin looked almost black.

“This neighborhood deserves whatever happens to it,” she said to the room.

She walked down the center aisle, head up, Robert trailing behind her. As she pushed through the exit doors, white floodlights flashed through the glass. A local news van had just pulled onto the curb, its camera crew stepping out into the dark.
