Vault Forty-Seven
“If You’re Ashamed of Me, Don’t Touch Me”—The Mafia Boss’s Answer Silenced His Entire Family · Capítulo 7
The bank basement smelled like old paper and floor wax. Luca’s men had already cleared the hallway, but nobody said much as they crossed the secure level and stopped at the steel door marked 47-A.
Emma stood with her arms folded tight over her coat. The locket at her throat felt too heavy. Luca’s jaw had gone hard in the elevator and stayed that way.
A clerk in a gray suit keyed the lock, then stepped back. “This is it.”
Luca pulled the door open.
The box inside was empty.
Emma blinked at the bare shelf. “No. There should be something.”
Luca leaned in, checked the corners, then the back wall. Nothing. A single paper dust mark. No folder, no envelope, no records. Just the smell of cold metal.
“Look again,” he said.
The clerk swallowed. “It was logged here.”
Gabriel gave a short breath through his nose. “That means someone moved it.”
Luca’s head snapped toward him. “Who had access?”
The clerk hesitated. Luca took one step closer, and the man answered fast. “Only the trust director and one senior code holder. The elevator camera rebooted ten minutes ago. That’s all I know.”
Emma touched the locket with two fingers. “We came for this?”
Gabriel was already reaching into his coat. “Not this one. Check 47-B.”
Luca turned. “There is no—”
“There is now,” Gabriel said.
They moved to the next vault. Same steel, same handle, same dead light above the frame. Inside, a black folder sat on the shelf beside a paper cup of coffee, still warm enough to fog the lid. A wooden chair had been dragged up too, like somebody had settled in and meant to stay awhile.
Emma stared at the coffee. “Someone was just here.”
“Minutes,” Gabriel said.
Luca opened the folder and flipped through the first pages. Bank transfers. Dates. Names. He stopped hard on one sheet and held it up.
“Rachel Parker,” he said.
Across from it: a signature in a heavy black line. Salvatore Moretti.
Emma took the page from him. Her eyes caught on the line below the amount.
Transportation Adjustment.
Her mouth went dry. “That’s a person.”
“Yes,” Gabriel said. “That’s how men like your uncle write murder.”
Luca was already turning pages. “There’s more.”
There was. Another payment. Another name. A gap in the files where a source should have been. On the inside cover, in fresh pencil, four words waited like a dare:
CHECK 47-B FIRST.
Gabriel’s mouth twisted. “Then someone wanted us here.”
Luca closed the folder. “Mercer Street,” he said. “Now.”
