Then the ballroom doors opened.

A man came in wearing a dark coat over street clothes, leather gloves still on, no tuxedo, no tie. He held a photograph in one hand like a warrant.

“Isabella,” he said. “We need to stop pretending this is over.”

Emma looked from the photo to his face and knew, before anyone named him, that whatever this was, it had been waiting a long time.

The ballroom was still making room for the shock when the doors opened again.

Not a servant this time. Not a late guest in a tux. A man came in with a dark coat over his shoulders, gloves on, hair gone silver at the sides. He didn’t belong under the chandeliers, and that made people look twice.

Emma’s fingers were still curled around Luca’s sleeve. Luca had gone rigid beside her, jaw set so hard the muscle jumped once.

The man took off one glove, then held up a photograph.

“Rachel Parker,” he said. “I’m Gabriel Moretti.”

No one moved. Even the glasses on the tray near the bar seemed too loud.

Emma’s eyes went to the picture. It showed her mother standing outside somewhere gray and cold, face turned toward the camera, and beside her a man in a wool coat with a watch flashed at the wrist. The face wasn’t clear. The watch was. A heavy band, dark face, the kind Salvatore always wore.

Luca stepped forward. “Where did you get that?”

Gabriel’s mouth barely changed. “From the same place your brother thought was safe.”

At that, Salvatore’s smile came back, thin and ugly. “This is ridiculous.”

Gabriel ignored him. He held the photo out toward Emma, not Salvatore. “Your mother was collecting proof. She didn’t trust the floor she stood on.”

Emma took the photo with numb fingers. The paper was warm from his hand. On the back, in her mother’s tight slant, was a date and a name half-smudged by age.

Rachel had written for her. Of course she had.

Gabriel looked at the locket at Emma’s throat. “Open it.”

“It’s just jewelry,” Emma said.

“No, it isn’t.”

Luca touched the chain once, then stopped when Emma’s shoulders tightened. She flipped the locket over, found the groove at the back with her nail, and pressed.

Something clicked.

A brass key dropped into her palm.

The room made a small sound together, like a breath dragged in all at once.

Gabriel nodded once. “Good. That opens vault 47-A at Moretti Trust. Your mother hid a box there years ago, then moved it when she had to. If the records are still where I left them, 47-B will tell you why she died.”

Luca’s face changed at that. Not soft. Sharper. His hand closed over Emma’s wrist, steady but not trapping.

“We’re going now,” he said.

Gabriel’s eyes moved to the doors, then back to Salvatore. “If he lets you leave.”
