The blue monitor on the main security rack pulsed twice, then flattened into a grid of white lines. A burst of static hissed from the wall speakers, cutting through the hum of the cooling fans.

Elena took a step toward the rack, her thumb turning her platinum band three times against her skin.

A woman spoke through the noise. The sound was thin, clipped by low-grade recording equipment, but the rhythm was hers. Three rapid beats, a pause, then two precise words.

“Log entry,” the voice said. “October fourteenth.”

Elena stopped. Her throat went dry. She had listened to that cadence over breakfast for nineteen years, had heard it recorded on answering machines and saved on old cassette tapes stored in her closet.

“Mother,” she whispered.

Adrian moved to step between her and the console, but Claire held up a flat palm, stopping him. “Listen,” Claire said.

“The financial links point directly to the central ledger,” Evelyn’s voice continued over the static. “The Vale network isn’t a business. It’s an engine. If my daughter is ever brought into this orbit, it means the fail-safes broke.”

The static on the screen dissolved into a sharp video feed. A small office appeared, lit by a single desk lamp. Evelyn Hart sat behind a pile of ledger books, her dark hair pulled back in a silver clip. But she wasn’t talking to a microphone. She was looking at the woman seated beside her.

The camera tilted down, catching the second woman’s profile.

She had high cheekbones, dark eyes, and a thread of gray running through her dark braid. Her right hand trembled as she reached out to adjust the lens.

“Is it running, Evelyn?” the woman asked. Her voice was breathy and deliberate.

“It’s running, Victoria,” Evelyn answered on the recording.

Elena stared at the screen, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Victoria Vale,” she said, her voice barely audible over the server fans. She turned to Adrian. “Your mother died when you were twelve.”

Adrian didn’t answer. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed on the glowing panel. His left shoulder angled forward, shielding Elena by habit, but his hands stayed still at his sides.

On the monitor, Victoria Vale leaned close to the camera lens. Lines of fatigue were cut deep into her skin.

“If you are watching this, Elena, my son has come for you,” Victoria said directly to the camera. “He thinks he can protect you. He thinks his father’s blood dies with him. But he carries the crown whether he wants it or not. The day Adrian claimed what his father left behind is the exact day your mother disappeared.”
