Proof on the Glass
The Mafia Boss Behind Her: The Husband Nobody Knew Existed · Capítulo 2
The quiet spread out from the double doors like water over tile. Wine glasses stopped midway to lips. Two wealthy investors stepped backward, knocking their elbows against a catering tray, but nobody looked down at the spilled champagne.
The man moving toward the center of the room didn’t rush. He wore a dark suit cut with simple lines, free of the ostentatious gold pins or silk trim the other men wore. His jaw was set hard, his eyes fixed on Julian.
Elena felt her throat tighten. Her hand moved on instinct, turning the plain platinum band around her finger three times.
Adrian reached the edge of the architectural display. Without a word, he stepped between Elena and Julian, angling his left shoulder slightly forward. He reached into his coat, pulled out a black leather binder, and dropped it onto the glass surface. The heavy thump rattled the miniature brass towers of Elena’s model.
Julian straightened his cuffs, his voice thin as he tried to recapture the room. “What is this supposed to be? A public event requires verified partners, not street thugs playing—”
“Page one,” Adrian said. His voice was low, cutting through the murmurs before they could build. “The civil marriage certification filed with the state county clerk three years ago.”
Julian glanced down. His hand hovered over the paper, then froze. Below the official seal, the signature was clear: Adrian Vale.
“Page three,” Adrian continued, turning the leaf with two fingers. “The financial audit of your firm’s secondary holding accounts. Along with four months of wiretaps showing your arrangements with lenders off the docks.”
Color drained from Julian’s face. He looked toward the reporters at the edge of the platform, then back to the binder. “This is nonsense. A legal contract requires notice. Your idea of public record—”
“Your idea of reality is limited to what you can show a camera, Julian,” Adrian said.
Adrian raised two fingers toward the perimeter wall. Two hotel security guards in grey suits moved in immediately. One pulled a pair of wire clippers from his pocket and cleanly snipped the VIP press badge from Julian’s lapel. They took Julian by each elbow, turning him away from the lights and ushering him briskly toward the service corridor exit. Julian didn’t say another word; his chin stayed dropped against his chest until the door swung shut behind him.
Silence fell across the three hundred guests once more. Adrian turned to Elena, his hand reaching out to briefly touch the small of her back. His palm was warm through her dress.
“You came,” she said quietly.
“I said I would,” he answered.
Before she could speak again, a low, synchronized hum echoed across the marble floor. In jacket pockets, inside leather purses, and on top of high-top tables, three hundred cellphones vibrated in unison.
