The bell over Naomi’s front door hadn’t finished shaking when Elliot heard Eleanor’s voice in the hall.

He stood with Bella on one hip in the narrow Cambridge living room, one hand braced on the back of a chair. Naomi was at the kitchen doorway, her arms folded tight, like she could hold the whole house together by force.

Two men in dark suits filled the entry behind Eleanor. One carried a leather case. The other held a cream envelope as if it might stain him.

Eleanor came in first, winter-straight in a navy coat, her stare moving once over Bella, once over Naomi, then fixing on Elliot.

“Move this along,” she said. “We have no need for drama.”

Bella pressed her syrup-sticky fingers into Elliot’s collar and watched the strangers with a serious little frown.

Elliot shifted her higher. “You brought lawyers to a child’s house.”

“I brought protection for my family.” Eleanor’s gaze went to Naomi. “And a proposal that spares everyone embarrassment.”

The lawyer with the envelope crossed the room and set it on the coffee table.

Naomi didn’t touch it.

“I’m not interested,” she said.

Eleanor’s mouth barely changed. “Two million. Immediate transfer. You leave Boston. You sign a full custody waiver. You keep your name out of the record.”

Bella made a small sound and buried her face against Elliot’s shoulder.

His jaw locked so hard it hurt.

“You offered her money to end my child,” he said.

Eleanor gave a thin shrug. “I offered a practical solution before matters became public.”

Naomi’s hands tightened around her own elbows. “You don’t get to talk about my daughter like she’s a problem.”

“She is a risk,” Eleanor said. “To the company, to the merger, to my son’s future.”

Elliot took one step forward. Bella bounced with it and grabbed his tie.

“No,” he said. “She’s my daughter.”

The room went still.

One of the lawyers cleared his throat and opened the leather case, sliding papers across the table with neat fingers. “Mr. Vance, there are options here. We can keep this private.”

Elliot looked at the paper, then at Naomi. “I’m done keeping people quiet for my family.”

He pulled out his phone and hit a name from memory.

Lucas answered on the second ring. “Talk.”

“I need Arthur Sterling,” Elliot said. “Now. Full custody filing. Emergency order if Eleanor moves again. And I want every share trail on the Rhodes side pulled tonight.”

A pause. “You sure?”

Elliot watched Eleanor’s face harden. “I’m sure.”

The room sharpened around him. Bella’s hand rested on his jaw now, sticky and warm.

On the phone, Lucas was already moving. “I’ll get him on speaker. Don’t sign anything.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. For the first time, she looked past control and into risk.

Elliot ended the call before Lucas could add more. “Take your offer and go.”

No one moved.

Then Eleanor’s chin lifted, and she gathered her coat as if the room had become unfit for her shoes.

“This is not finished,” she said.

“No,” Elliot answered. “It isn’t.”

When she turned for the hall, Naomi exhaled once through her nose. Outside, a car door shut hard.

Elliot crossed to the window and looked down.

A black Mercedes sat at the curb. The plate flashed in the gray morning light, and his stomach tightened.

Eleanor had not come alone, and she had not come unprepared.

Above the street, the house felt very small.
