Marcus Hill rolled the surveillance trackball with two fingers, keeping the crosshairs pinned to Camera Fourteen. The feed showed the bulk candy aisle.

On screen, nine-year-old Tyler Whitmore looked left, then right. His small hand shot out, snagging an imported hazelnut chocolate bar off the top rack. He shoved it down into the deep pocket of his cargo shorts. It was clumsy, standard kid theft. Marcus leaned back in his squeaking vinyl chair, ready to log the timestamp and let the front registers catch it. A mother paying attention would spot the bulge in ten seconds.

Karen turned the corner with the cart. Her designer bag swung from her shoulder, the laminated HOA badge glinting against the black leather strap. She caught Tyler by his sleeve before he took three steps.

Marcus reached for his notepad. Usually, this was where the mother slapped the boy’s hand, gave a lecture about honesty, and dropped the candy back on the shelf.

Instead, Karen crouched down. She didn’t scold him. Her French-manicured fingers dipped straight into the boy’s pocket and pulled out the blue-and-gold foil wrapper.

She glanced up at the aisle ceiling, checking for staff, blind to the dark dome lens twelve feet above her head. With two quick snaps, she tore the edge off the foil. She broke a square off the chocolate slab, slid it between her teeth, and chewed. Tyler held up both hands, asking for a piece, but she swatted him away with her forearm.

Marcus stopped rolling the trackball. “You have got to be kidding me,” he said to the empty room.

Karen stood up, chewing steadily. She marched five paces to the endcap where Westbridge had stacked paper towels three tiers high. With a practiced twist of her wrist, she shoved the wadded foil deep into the dead space behind an eight-pack of quilted rolls.

She smoothed her beige sweater, adjusted her purse, and motioned for the boy to keep walking.

Marcus hit the red record toggle. He picked up his store radio, keyed the side button, and spoke in a flat drawl. “Reeves, this is Hill. We don’t have an unruly kid on five. We’ve got an intentional thief.”
