Tyler ripped the foil top off a bag of sourdough pretzels and shook it like a salt shaker. Hard brown nuggets bounced down the wax of Aisle Three, cracking under the wheels of the cart. Behind him, Madison jammed a straw into an apple juice pouch, missed the inner seal, and squeezed. Amber syrup dripped onto a shelf of imported potato chips.

Brandon turned into the aisle with a plastic dustpan tucked under one arm. He stopped three feet from the spill, his sneakers sticking to the puddle.

“Ma’am,” Brandon said. “I can’t let them open merchandise before the register.”

Karen did not look down. Her French-manicured thumb flicked across the screen of her phone, then settled on the strap of her purse. The gold-embossed Brookfield Estates credential dangled against her hip, catching the fluorescent light.

“They’re hungry,” she said. “I intend to pay for them at checkout. Assuming your cashiers can handle their jobs.”

“It’s a slip hazard,” Brandon said, pointing at the pool spreading toward the bottom shelves. “And the pretzels are getting crushed into the floor.”

Tyler stomped a pretzel chunk to demonstrate, grinding the salted dough into white powder. Cody giggled and threw an empty wrapper into a box of organic crackers.

Karen took a step forward, closing the distance until Brandon had to tilt his chin down to meet her eyes.

“Do you know who signs off on the commercial sponsorships for this strip?” she asked. Her voice stayed low, clipped and flat. “I direct four hundred sixteen households in Brookfield Estates. We bring this location forty percent of its weekend revenue.”

“The policy applies to all customers,” Brandon said.

“You’re an hourly clerk with a broom, Brandon.” She read his plastic nametag with a slow squint. “You don’t lecture property managers on safety. Pick up that juice before someone slips, or I call regional leasing from my car.”

She pushed past him, the cart squeaking as its front wheel rolled directly over a crushed pretzel knot.

Brandon didn’t answer. His jaw locked, and he stepped back toward the column to lift the store intercom phone off its hook.
