The legal documents arrived in three blue binders, bound by steel fasteners that smelled of machine oil. There were no cameras on the municipal courthouse steps, only a clerk stamping dates on carbon duplicates. An assistant district attorney laid the files on the oak table without looking up from his coffee.

Marcus sat across from his corporate counsel, reviewing the terms of Victoria Sterling’s judicial diversion.

Under the court agreement, Victoria avoided jail time by signing a sworn stipulation of fact. The public record detailed every administrative override she executed on the Asterion network, explicitly naming the young landscaper, the night nurse, and Marcus. Asterion’s board terminated her employment for gross misconduct, canceling her executive credentials and voiding all stock options without severance.

“She requested community service at a gallery,” his attorney said.

“What did the court assign?”

“Two hundred hours cleaning county transit buses.”

Marcus turned the page.

The municipal police department issued its disciplinary findings before noon. Officer Daniel Miller received a ninety-day unpaid suspension and a permanent bar from training junior recruits. The internal affairs report cited his failure to consult dispatch data before applying physical restraints.

Officer Jason Ruiz received a formal reprimand for delayed intervention.

Ruiz had requested a brief meeting with Marcus in the precinct hallway earlier that morning. Standing beside a dented vending machine, the younger officer kept his hands flat against his trouser seams.

“I saw the registration on my tablet,” Ruiz said, his throat clicking. “I waited three minutes to speak.”

“Why?” Marcus asked.

“He had ten years on the force. I worried about my evaluation.” Ruiz looked down at the gray linoleum. “It was cowardice.”

Marcus nodded once, accepting the admission without offering hollow comfort. Systems demanded strict accuracy, not personal absolution.
