The vibration ran through the floorboards before the sound even hit. Three hundred phones went off together, a chorus of short, dry buzzes that killed every conversation in the room.

Around them, men in tuxedos and women in satin gowns reached into pockets and silk clutches. Screens lit the ballroom in pale squares.

Elena looked down at the nearest screen, held by a city commissioner two feet away. A mugshot filled the display: a sharp-featured woman, dark hair pulled back, with an old white scar slicing straight through her left eyebrow. Beneath the image, bold text flashed: Adrian Vale’s silence was bought with blood. The Hart family was sold out from the inside.

A low murmur rolled through the crowd, sour and fast, the kind of noise people make right before a stampede.

Adrian did not look at his phone. His left hand clamped around Elena’s elbow, firm enough to leave a mark. “We’re leaving,” he said.

“Adrian—”

“Now, Elena.”

He shoved through the knot of investors without an apology. People recoiled, pressing their backs against the linen tables to stay clear of his coat. Two private guards tried to step into their path near the service doors, but Adrian caught the first one by the lapel, drove him into the wall with a single shove, and kicked the brass push-bar open.

They broke into the carpeted executive hallway, and the heavy door slammed shut behind them, cutting the roar of the ballroom in half.

Elena ripped her arm free. Her breathing came thin and fast. She turned the platinum band around her finger three times, her knuckles white.

“Stop dragging me,” she said, her voice shaking with quiet anger. “Who was that woman on the screens? Why does she have my family name in her mouth?”

Adrian kept walking toward the monitoring suites forty yards down the hall. “Her name is Claire. She used to run dead drops for my family.”

“You told me your family was dead.”

“Most of them are.” He reached into his jacket, his thumb resting on the grip of his pistol. “Someone triggered an automated failsafe on the hotel servers. That text wasn’t sent to humiliate you. It’s an evacuation pulse to clear the crowd.”

“Clear it for who?”

Before he could answer, the ceiling went dead.

A mechanical snap echoed through the air ducts. The recessed white lights died all at once. For two seconds, there was only pitch-black darkness and the sound of Elena’s breath.

Then the emergency power took over. Amber-red floor strips flickered awake along the baseboards, throwing long, bloody shadows up the walls.

Adrian spun, his left shoulder angling forward to shield her, his gun clearing the leather holster under his jacket in a single smooth pull.

From the gloom twenty feet ahead, near the reinforced monitoring suite, leather boots clicked against the tile.

“Put it away, Adrian,” a woman’s raspy voice said from the red mist. “You know you can’t shoot what’s already dead. Isn’t that right, Elena Rose Hart?”
