The notification chime on Karen’s laptop sounded every four seconds. She sat at the granite kitchen island with an ice pack resting against her temple, the glow of the screen washing across her unpainted fingernails.

Someone with the username CaryShopper91 had uploaded an MP4 file to the Brookfield Estates Community Forum at 6:14 p.m. The thumbnail showed Karen, red-faced among crushed cornflakes, clutching her handbag while Daniel Reeves pointed his tablet at her nose.

The caption read: Is this who’s fining us fifty bucks for having our trash cans out past seven a.m.?

Karen jabbed her mouse cursor over the red moderation banner at the top of the group. “Idiots,” she muttered. She clicked the three dots beside the video to delete the thread and issue a thirty-day suspension.

A gray dialog box popped up: Action failed. You do not have permission to moderate this group.

She refreshed the page. The moderation banner was gone. In the top corner, her account had been stripped down to Standard Resident.

Beneath the video, the comment counter rolled past eighty.

Greg Finch (Lot 114): “She got on her hands and knees with a metal ruler last April to tell my wife our hardwood bark mulch was two inches instead of three. Now she’s printing fake sale tags on a color copier?”

Sarah Jenkins (Lot 88): “She sent code enforcement because my sister parked overnight and her driver-side mirror stuck out two inches over the sidewalk. Look at her kid trashing the pasta aisle.”

Dave Miller (Lot 202): “Four hundred and sixteen homes paying four hundred a quarter, and our president is stealing bone-in ribeyes.”

Karen grabbed her phone and dialed Melissa Barnes, the board treasurer. The call clicked straight to voicemail on the second ring.

She tapped out a text: Melissa, the community board has been hacked. Restore my admin access right now or I am calling legal.

No dots appeared. Instead, an automated alert pinged her inbox from the association management software. The subject line was black and bold: Notice of Special Executive Session — Motion to Vacate Presidency Pursuant to Bylaw 9.4.

The hearing was scheduled for Thursday evening, seven sharp, at the clubhouse.

The brass latch on the conference room door clicked into the jamb behind Karen, sealing out the damp autumn wind.
