The afternoon sun warmed the stone pavers of the circular drive. Steel handcuffs bit into Marcus Vaughn’s wrists, pinning his arms behind his back against the fender of his red Ferrari.

“Tighter, Daniel,” Victoria Sterling said. She snapped her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose. “He probably has pry bars in the trunk.”

Officer Daniel Miller yanked the chain. The ratchet clicked two notches tighter, pinching skin beside Marcus’s silver chronograph.

Marcus did not pull away. He rolled his shoulders back, planting his shoes on the driveway.

“Check the glovebox,” Victoria called toward the hedges where three neighbors watched. “People like this do not buy four-million-dollar homes in Ashford Hills.”

“Do you assume every resident must look like your father to hold a deed?” Marcus asked.

His voice stayed level. The quiet tone seemed to strike her harder than a shout.

Victoria lunged across the drive. Her open palm hit Marcus’s chest with a dry slap, snapping his lapel against his collarbone.

“Ma’am, step back,” Miller said, resting a hand on his holster flap without moving between them. “Keep cooperating, sir.”

Marcus looked down at the smudge on his jacket. He did not flinch. He rubbed his thumb against his inner wrist, feeling his pulse push against cold metal.

“Get him off my street,” Victoria said. Her breath smelled of mint and espresso. “I run luxury partnerships for Asterion. I know who belongs behind these gates.”

Across the circle, Clara Hendricks held her smartphone against her sternum, the camera lens pointed at Miller’s badge.

Miller shifted his gun belt. “We’re waiting for the flatbed, Miss Sterling.”

“Don’t wait,” she said. “Put him in the cruiser.”
