Tires crunched over the gravel at the driveway apron. Detective Santos climbed out of an unmarked sedan, carrying a recording kit and an interview log.

Detective Santos came in through the side door with a tablet under one arm and a hard plastic recorder in the other.

She did not look at the Mustang. She looked at Raymond.

“Chief Ellis. I’m Detective Santos. County fraud and property crimes.”

He gave a small nod and kept his hands where she could see them. The driveway still held the heat from the sun. Denise stood by the front fender with her arms folded tight, legal envelope tapping against one forearm. Cole had drifted back toward the garage, hands buried in his jacket pockets, eyes on the concrete.

Santos stopped beside the cruiser and glanced at the paperwork in Raymond’s hand. “You’re not to run your own names through any department system. You’re not to touch evidence except to secure it. Understood?”

“Understood.”

“Good. Then you’re a complainant until I say otherwise.”

He folded the two-page contract once, then again, and slid it into his chest pocket.

Santos’s mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “Start at the top.”

Raymond told it plain. The driveway. The claim of purchase. The signature that did not sit right. The title application. Denise kept trying to cut in, but Santos held up one finger and let Raymond finish.

Then she asked for the association documents.

He led her to the open garage. The red tool chest stood against the wall. A microfiber cloth lay on the workbench beside a tray of spark plugs. Santos lifted the blue binder with two fingers and flipped it open. “Front-easement drainage forms?”

“Those are the only papers she had access to,” Raymond said. “Secretary was out on medical leave.”

Santos looked at the signature on the contract, then at the name on a drainage authorization sheet. Same slant. Same cut at the last letter. She tapped the recorder casing once.

“Someone traced from this stack,” she said. “Not an accident.”

Denise’s voice came sharp from the driveway. “That’s not possible. I already uploaded the title change.”

Santos turned her head. “Uploaded when?”

Denise hesitated half a beat too long.

“Forty-eight hours ago,” Santos said, making a note. “Then we’re past a driveway dispute.”

She looked at Raymond. “I’m opening a fraud investigation. For now, this car stays here.”

A patrol car turned in at the cul-de-sac entrance, lights flashing blue across the Mustang’s roof.

Santos closed the binder. “Hold on,” she said. “We’re not done with your neighbor.”
