The laptop was old enough to have a faint fan whine when it woke up.

Claire had it balanced on the edge of a worktable in the basement office, one hand on the lid so it wouldn’t slide. Adrian stood behind her with Leo tucked against his side, both of them watching the black screen fill with a pale woman seated in what looked like a sunroom. Elena Vale had neat hair, a cardigan buttoned wrong at the top, and eyes that kept moving just off camera like she was checking whether someone was still listening.

She pressed her hands flat on the table in front of her.

“If you’re seeing this,” she said, “then I didn’t get to speak in time.”

Leo’s fingers tightened around Adrian’s sleeve.

Elena took a breath and kept going. “Adrian, I need you to stop treating this like a company problem. It’s not a board issue. It’s a home issue. Silas has people in the house, and not just staff.”

Adrian’s jaw went hard. He looked at the floor, then the door, then back to the screen.

Elena’s mouth twisted once. “If Leo starts saying strange things, if he stops eating, if the rooms feel wrong, listen to him. He won’t say it cleanly. He never does.”

Claire watched Adrian’s hands. They were open at his sides, but the knuckles had gone white.

On the video, Elena reached down and lifted a folded sheet of paper. “There’s a name you need to remember: Margaret Harper. Fourth housekeeper. She ran because she saw too much.”

Leo made a small sound. “Fourth?”

Elena nodded as if she could hear him. “Yes, sweetheart. She’s not the only one.”

She set the paper down. “And there’s a box. Safe-deposit box four twelve. It’s under Claire Morgan’s name.”

Claire blinked. “Mine?”

Elena looked straight into the camera then, as if she could see through the screen and across years. “You came to Saint Agnes Hospital with your mother. You were asking about grant forms for her care. I kept your name because you were the only one in that waiting room who looked like you meant what you said.”

Adrian turned toward Claire. “You knew my mother?”

“I met a woman once in a hospital corridor,” Claire said. “She told me to keep my head down and keep copies of everything.”

The image on the laptop flickered. Elena leaned closer.

“If Silas knows you have this, he’ll move faster,” she said. “If he’s already moved, then trust no one who tells you Leo is overreacting. He’s not. He’s warning you.”

The screen gave a thin burst of static. Elena’s face blurred, then sharpened.

“Get to the box,” she said. “And Claire—if you’re there, stay.”

The video cut to black.

For one beat, nobody moved.

Then Adrian reached past Claire and slammed the laptop shut. “We’re going to the bank.”

From somewhere above them, a floorboard creaked. Heavy. Slow.

Claire looked at the basement door.

Three slow knocks came from the other side.
