The control room phone rang twice before Marcus answered, then he put it on speaker.

Donna heard the room behind him before she heard his voice. Fan noise. Key clicks. A chair rolling.

“Donna?”

“I’m in the truck.”

Rain ticked on the windshield. The cab smelled like wet vinyl and old coffee. Her knees were braced against the dash so she could keep from shifting.

“The board is on,” Marcus said. “Elena’s here. Walter too. Margaret joined from her hotel.”

Three hundred miles away, Donna thought. Or more.

Margaret came over the line a second later. “Ms. Hale, give me the clock.”

Donna looked at the dark phone screen, then at the dash clock. “Five minutes forty seconds on the validation window. That’s if the timestamp on the last renewal still holds.”

“Still holds?” Walter asked.

“The renewal was nearly forty-eight hours old when they fired me,” Donna said. “If nobody with root authority renews it, the system will go into protective state.”

“Elena?” Margaret said.

“I’m looking at the status page,” Elena said. Her breath came through the speaker before her words. “She’s right. The countdown is live.”

Donna closed her eyes once, then opened them. “I told Nathan the clock didn’t care who was embarrassed.”

Nobody spoke.

Marcus cleared his throat. “Line Seven still has the mismatch. Central display shows normal pressure. Local sensor says drift. We’re treating local as truth.”

“Good,” Donna said. “Do not trust a clean dashboard over a bad field read.”

Walter was typing hard enough that she could hear it. “For the record, Ms. Hale, you were terminated before this call?”

“Yes.”

“And your account is revoked?”

“Yes.”

“Then I need to hear this exactly.”

Donna kept her hand on the steering wheel. “I am no longer authorized to operate your system.”

Margaret paused. “But you can tell us what happens.”

“Yes. When the validation expires, the cloud layer stops accepting control commands from the current operating profile. The compressors step down in sequence. Valves move to safe positions. It’s staged. No bang, no fire. Just a controlled drop until the network is stable enough to sit there.”

Elena said, “That’s the plan the system follows?”

“That’s the safeguard the system was built with.”

Walter exhaled once through his nose. “And only a currently authorized custodian can renew it.”

“One person,” Donna said. “That’s the hole.”

Margaret’s voice sharpened. “Who left one person in that role?”

Donna watched rain gather, run, and break apart on the glass. “Your company did.”

A beat. Then Elena said, “We’re pulling the field leads in now.”

The speaker crackled with the first new call coming through, and Donna heard Marcus say, “Okay. Then we do this by the book.”
