The Birthday That Broke Me · Capítulo 6

When I finally reached her street, the house looked dark except for the front lamp and the square of light over the porch. Lena opened the door before I could knock. Her hair was tied up, one sleeve pushed to her elbow, like she had been waiting right there with her hand on the knob.

“You look frozen,” she said.

“I am.”

She stepped back and let me in without touching my coat or asking where I’d been. The house smelled like dust and dish soap and a candle somebody had blown out earlier. No music. No people. Just quiet rooms and the low hum of the fridge.

We sat on her couch with the lamp on between us. I told her about the cake first, because that seemed like the thing I could say without falling apart. Blue frosting. Huge enough to feed twenty people. My brother’s name stretched across it in white letters like the rest of the table had never been meant to exist.

Then I told her I’d said it was my birthday too.

Then I told her my mother had looked past me like I was asking for spare change, and my father had frowned at me like I was the one who made everything awkward.

Lena’s jaw worked once. “I never liked them,” she said.

A laugh came out of me that wasn’t really a laugh. I pressed my palm against my eyes.

“They just kept going,” I said. “Like I wasn’t there.”

“You were there.”

The words hit harder than I expected. I dropped my hand and looked at her. She was leaning forward, elbows on her knees, watching me like she was holding the whole story up so it couldn’t fall through the floor.

“Yeah,” I said, and my voice cracked on it.

She nodded once. “Stay here tonight.”

I looked at the couch, then at the dark hallway, then back at her.

“Okay,” I said.

And for the first time all night, the room felt big enough to breathe in.
