The doors opened into the basement corridor. Fluorescent tubes flickered over exposed pipes, and the smell of bleach hung heavy in the cold air. The concrete floor felt damp under her shoes. Victoria walked past grey doors until she reached a dim room filled with mop buckets and warning signs.

A woman in green coveralls stood near a shelf of industrial cleaner. Her name tag read Elena Rodriguez.

“Can I help you?” Elena crossed her arms over her chest. “This area is restricted to facility staff.”

“I am checking working conditions,” Victoria said, stepping over a puddle near a leaking bottle of solvent.

Elena glanced toward the open doorway, her arms remaining tight against her ribs.

“The ventilation exhaust has been broken for three months,” Elena said. “They cut our safety budget twice this year.”

“Who cut the funding?”

“Mr. Keller.” Elena pointed to a chemical stain on her canvas sleeve. “When I asked for rubber gloves, he said my hair was too distracting for executive floors anyway.”

Elena pulled a binder from a shelf and showed Victoria a stack of printed tickets.

Two other cleaners stopped near the water cooler, watching the exchange in silence.

“Did anyone log the safety violations?” Victoria asked.

“We submitted forty tickets,” Elena said, her voice dropping lower. “Management marked every ticket resolved without sending anyone down here to inspect the room.”

Victoria tapped her phone screen and took three photos of the rusty drain and the eye-wash station. Elena’s posture softened, her arms dropping to her sides as Victoria noted the serial numbers on the expired extinguishers.

“Keep your team down here for now,” Victoria said. “Things are about to change.”

A red light flashed on the electronic reader beside the stairwell door.

The steel bolt clicked shut with a metallic strike. A high chime echoed from the ceiling speaker, signalling that security was revoking contractor access across every floor.
