Wife Handed Me Divorce Papers At Her Mother's Gala Taunting "Let's See How You Survive Without My Money"—Next Morning Her Head Accountant Froze In Horror · Capítulo 5
The Palmer House ballroom did not look like a private meeting anymore. It looked like a conference gone bad.
Rows of folding chairs had been lined up under the chandeliers, and every table held a laptop, a stack of binders, or a paper cup gone cold. Two projectors threw pale rectangles against the far wall. Men in suits stood in knots near the windows, talking too fast and checking phones. Vanessa stopped in the doorway and took in the setup before anyone saw her.
Then she saw Daniel.
He was on the low stage, not in the corner she expected, but up front in a navy three-piece suit that fit his frame like it had been made for him. His hands were still, folded once at his waist. Marcus stood near the podium with a tablet in one hand and a legal pad in the other, like he had been there for hours.
Vanessa came in hard, pearls at her throat, jaw set.
“What is this?”
Daniel looked at her. “A meeting.”
“This is not what we discussed.”
“No,” he said. “It’s better for accuracy.”
A low murmur moved through the room. She could see Arthur Pendelton near the second projector, face gray, paper sticking out of his briefcase. Adrian was there too, shirt collar damp, hair combed back like that could fix anything. Evelyn sat a few rows down, straight-backed, fingers at her bracelet.
Marcus tapped the tablet. “We’ll start in two minutes.”
Vanessa climbed the steps to the stage. “You sent me into a legal ambush?”
“I sent you to a room with the people who signed the papers,” Daniel said.
He turned toward the screen. A slide came up with a neat row of numbers.
“Mercer Core acquired forty-four percent of the Blackwell debt notes,” Marcus said. “At sixty cents on the dollar.”
Vanessa stared at the figure. “No.”
“Forty-four percent,” Marcus said again. “Enough to force a restructuring if we choose it. Enough to file for Chapter 7 if negotiations fail.”
Her gaze snapped to Daniel. “You bought our debt?”
“I bought leverage,” he said.
Evelyn stood so fast her chair scraped. “From who?”
“Three funds,” Marcus said. “And one bank that wanted out before the end of the quarter.”
Adrian made a sound halfway between a cough and a curse. Vanessa caught the tremor in his hand when he reached for his phone.
Marcus changed slides. Shell companies. Transfer dates. A wire trail. Then a row of emails, with Evelyn’s name in the header and Adrian copied on every one.
Vanessa’s mouth went dry.
There were the words she had sent. The ones she had not meant for a screen this size.
“Adrian’s kickback structures,” Marcus said. “And Mrs. Blackwell’s approval chain.”
Evelyn’s hand rose to her pearls. “That is private correspondence.”
“It was,” Daniel said. “Then it became evidence.”
Vanessa looked from the screen to the people in the room, and then back to Daniel. He did not move. He did not raise his voice.
He only said, “Sit down, Vanessa. We’re discussing what happens next.”
