Karen stepped across the flagstone seam, closing the remaining three feet between them.

The aluminum clipboard cut through the warm air, its sharp corner stopping four inches from Alicia’s nose. A stack of printed violation forms fluttered against the steel clip. The sun glinted off the metal edge, throwing a bright spot of glare into Alicia’s eyes.

“You think you can sit there and ignore me?” Karen barked.

Alicia did not blink. She kept her chin level, her gaze fixed on the silver rivet in the center of the board.

“Lower the board,” Alicia said.

Karen brought it closer, the shadow of the metal tray blocking the sun from Alicia’s face.

“I run this board,” Karen said. “I sign every compliance notice in this phase.”

A dry breeze rattled the palm fronds beyond the white wall. A blue paper escaped the top clip and drifted onto the flagstones near the pool edge. Neither woman looked down at it.

“You signed a deed with covenants,” Karen said. “I decide who gets approved and who gets fined out of this neighborhood.”

Alicia stood her ground without taking a step back.

Karen’s fuchsia blouse flared as she pulled her shoulders back, her chest rising against the silk. Her flat sandals slapped against the stone coping as she adjusted her footing on the narrow edge.

“I have three blank citation forms in my hand right now,” Karen said. “I can add five hundred dollars in daily penalties before sunset.”

“You are trespassing,” Alicia said.

“I am checking this pool area for safety breaches,” Karen said. “I will lien your home if you try to stop me.”

She tilted the clipboard again, thrusting the metal edge toward Alicia’s jaw.

“I have forced two other owners off this loop with non-compliance fines,” Karen said. “You will not be the first one I break.”

Alicia stood still. Her arms hung relaxed at her sides, her fingers motionless under the heat of the sun.

“You have five seconds to walk out my gate,” Alicia said.

Karen laughed, a sharp sound that bounced off the glass doors behind them.

“You do not give orders here,” Karen said.

She slammed the metal board down onto the glass table with a loud crack that rattled the water glass against its coaster.

“I am checking this filter casing right now,” Karen said.

She took another full step forward, invading the narrow space between Alicia’s feet and the pool edge. Her face turned red under the bright sunlight.

“And if you do not step aside, I will have the board freeze your access keys by tonight,” Karen said.

Alicia did not flinch. She did not raise her hands or shift her weight back toward the lounger. She watched the red blotches spread down Karen’s neck.

Karen’s teeth clicked together. Her face twitched with heat as she reached out a stiff hand, her fingers curling toward Alicia’s bare shoulder.
