A False Death Recorded
They Left Her in the Snow for Giving Birth to Twin Girls. The Mountain Man Who Found Her Refused to Let Her Be Cast Away Again. · Capítulo 5
The spring thaw turned the mountain track into black soup. Benjamin Cole led his roan mare into the yard an hour before noon, his boots thick with clay.
“Owen Harrow rode the creek wash three times this week,” Benjamin said. He stopped near the porch, shifting his weight between worn boot heels. His hands twisted his hat brim into a tight roll. “He carries an iron spade on his saddle.”
Ara stood in the cabin doorway with a sleeping girl pressed against her shoulder. Her free hand drew her wool shawl tight against her throat.
Elias stepped out from the shed, an axe handle resting across his forearm. He laid the wood on the porch rail and rubbed his thumb along a knot in the pine. “He won’t find bones on that plain.”
“He does not need bones,” Martha Bell said, riding in from the south road. She swung down from her bay gelding and looped the reins over the hitching post. She stripped off her thick leather gloves with two sharp jerks and dropped them onto the wash bench.
“You came from town?” Elias asked.
“The courthouse,” Martha said. She stepped past him and looked up at Ara. “Thomas went to the clerk on Tuesday. He filed a formal notice of your death.”
Ara went stiff. “On what proof?”
“Postpartum madness,” Martha said. “Thomas swore the current took you. The clerk took three silver dollars to sign.”
Benjamin kept his eyes on his wet stirrups. “He bought five yards of black ribbon for his coat.”
“And two barrels of flour for a wedding feast,” Martha added.
Water dripped steadily from the cedar roof onto the stone stoop.
Ara shifted the infant against her ribs. Her knuckles showed white where she gripped the gray cloth at her neck. “He calls me mad to make himself a widower.”
“He wants an heir,” Martha said. “The law takes his word unless the dead walk through the doors.”
Elias watched Ara’s face. “You don’t owe that street your breath.”
“My daughters do,” Ara said. Her voice cut clear across the cold yard. “They will not live under the name of drowned ghosts.”
She met Elias’s eyes. “Harness the team for Sunday.”
