That Saturday at 7:02 AM, the red garage doors rolled up with a rattle. Maya stood on the concrete apron wearing canvas boots and her helmet. Hank stepped out, hooked his thumbs into his belt loops, and gestured inside with a nod.

“Take off the helmet,” he said. “Put on those safety glasses on the bench.”

The shop smelled of iron, oil, and solvent. Maya traded her helmet for the plastic glasses, adjusting the strap around her ears. Hank walked her past the iron benches, past the pneumatic lifts and rows of socket trays, straight to a wooden door at the back with a brass padlock. He unkeyed the lock and swung the door open.

The back room was windowless and silent. Butcher paper covered the concrete floor, taped at the edges. Crayon drawings stretched from wall to wall—yellow motorcycles with purple handlebars, six exhaust pipes blowing red flames, and smiling faces wearing black helmets. A wooden toolbox sat in the corner, covered in dust.

“Evelyn’s shop,” Hank said quietly, standing in the doorway. He didn’t step on the paper. “She designed the loud ones.”

Maya crouched at the edge, careful not to let her boots touch the crayon lines. She looked up at Hank. “Six pipes make it faster?”

“No,” Hank said, a twitch at the corner of his mustache. “Makes it louder. But she liked it.” He pulled a key from his pocket and tossed it onto a workbench near the door. “This room stays locked. The rest of the shop is where we work. You want to build real things, you learn how to respect the tools first.”

He pointed to a tray of wrenches spread across a rag.

“Name every size by eight o’clock,” Hank said. “Drop one on the floor, you sweep the whole bay.”

Maya picked up a five-eighths wrench, feeling the cold weight of the steel against her palm.
