THE AIRPORT OFFICER SAID I DIDN’T BELONG IN FIRST CLASS—BUT THE BRIEFCASE HE TRIED TO OPEN COULD DESTROY FOUR HUNDRED CAREERS BEFORE THE NIGHT WAS OVER · Capítulo 4

The holding room had beige cinder-block walls, a gray linoleum floor, and a bolted steel table. Officer Davies sat across from Marcus, typing with two fingers into a mounted terminal while the carbon-fiber briefcase rested flat between two evidence bags on the back counter.

The plastic cuffs bit into Marcus’s wrists. He pressed his left thumb against the raised crystal of his grandfather’s watch, feeling the mechanical tick through the strap. He kept his heels flat on the floor, watching the digital wall clock. It read 3:34 p.m.

Davies hit the spacebar twice. “You made this difficult on yourself, Hayes.”

“You logged an unlawful seizure at three-nineteen,” Marcus said.

“I logged non-compliance during a gate check.” Davies did not look up from the monitor. “I can hold you four hours before filing.”

The heavy latch on the door clicked. Claire stepped inside, carrying a clear plastic envelope containing Marcus’s boarding pass, wallet, and phone. Behind her stood an airline operations supervisor in a yellow vest, clutching a tablet with a cracked screen.

Claire placed the envelope on the steel table. “His phone will not stop vibrating, Officer.”

“He gets no property access during processing,” Davies said.

“The airport director’s office is calling Gate 32,” the supervisor said. His voice was tight. “Three passengers recorded you cuffing him at the scanner. One clip has ninety thousand views online. Chicago Tribune called our media desk four minutes ago.”

Davies froze, his thick fingers hovering over the keyboard. “It was an active gate stop.”

“Operations wants this off the public concourse,” the supervisor said.

Marcus looked down through the clear plastic. The phone screen flashed with back-to-back alerts from his engineering lead, followed by a banner from legal counsel: Equity group demanding emergency board quorum. Need repository verification by 6:00 Pacific.

Flight 427 was taxiing toward Runway 28R. The physical trip to San Francisco was dead.

Marcus looked past Davies to Claire’s security lanyard. Back-office airline suites ran on isolated commercial networks, shielded from public terminal traffic. A direct Cat-6 line with clean throughput could reach the California mainframe in milliseconds.

He just had to get out of this room.
