While I was sitting in seat 1A on my own airline, a flight attendant pointed toward the economy cabin and said, "You need to leave first class. · Capítulo 3

The cabin had gone thin and still. A purse zipper stopped halfway. Someone in 2A kept one hand on the armrest like he’d forgotten what to do with it.

Melanie stood in the aisle with her chin up. David was beside her, one hand on the wall by the galley curtain. Priya hovered a step behind, eyes down.

Captain Hayes came up from the front, not hurried, just fast enough to mean business. He took one look at Vanessa, then another. His shoulders straightened.

“Ms. Cole,” he said.

That name moved through the cabin before anyone had a chance to ask for it. Vanessa didn’t answer right away. She watched his face, waiting.

Hayes cleared his throat. “This is Vanessa Cole. She’s the chief executive officer of Sterling Airways.”

No one spoke for a beat.

Then a man in 2C let out a short laugh that sounded like he didn’t mean to make it. Somebody farther back said, “No kidding.” A phone came up in the row behind them.

Melanie’s mouth opened, then shut. Her fists flexed once at her sides.

Vanessa turned to Hayes. “Captain, I’d like to keep this focused. She told me I don’t belong in first class. My boarding pass scans. I want her employee number and the exact basis for that instruction.”

Hayes glanced at Melanie, then back to Vanessa. “Understood.”

David swallowed. “Ms. Cole, I was only trying to keep things calm.”

“Then keep it calm on the right facts,” Vanessa said. “Did you verify the reservation?”

“Yes,” he said.

“Did you find any issue with the seat assignment?”

“No.”

“Then why did you ask me to move?”

He looked at the carpet. “To avoid a disturbance.”

Vanessa nodded once, like she’d expected that answer and didn’t like it any better for being honest.

Priya lifted her head. “I checked the pass,” she said, voice small but clear. “It was valid.”

Melanie snapped, “Priya.”

Priya flinched, but she kept talking. “I did. And… this kind of thing has happened before.”

The cabin tightened again. Hayes’s jaw set. Vanessa looked from one face to the next, taking them in like a chart.

“Then we’re not done here,” she said. “Captain, I want everyone’s names. And I want the report preserved.”

Priya kept her eyes on the carpet seam when Vanessa asked the question a second time.

“Have you seen this happen before?”
