The Tow Order
HOA Woman Tried to Tow His Daughter’s Porsche — Then the Driver Revealed Who Owned the Company · Capítulo 2
Emily stood by the car with her keys clutched at her belt line. Patricia Whitmore was at the curb in a white Mercedes, one sleeve of her royal-blue blazer worked up and down her wrist like it annoyed her. A sprinkler clicked somewhere in the side yard, steady as a clock.
“Who told you to hook up my daughter’s car?” Daniel asked.
The tow driver kept one hand on the control box at the truck’s rear. “I’m working off dispatch, sir.”
“Then who made the call?”
“HOA order,” the man said. “I don’t have the board form on me.”
Daniel looked past him at the wheel-lift, then at the Porsche’s rear tire. “That is not abandoned. That is parked in my driveway.”
Patricia called from the curb, “Mr. Carter, your daughter’s vehicle is not in keeping with the visual character of the neighborhood.”
Emily took a step forward. “It’s my graduation gift.”
Patricia turned one shoulder, already bored by that. “High school students do not need attention-seeking sports cars in plain view.”
“I earned a state scholarship,” Emily said. “My dad gave it to me.”
The tow driver glanced between them, jaw working.
Daniel crossed the driveway in three quick steps and slapped his palm against the flat side panel of the truck. The sound cracked off the metal.
“Stop,” he said. “Right now.”
The driver flinched. “Sir—”
“You are touching stolen property.”
“It’s an HOA tow.”
“On what authority?”
Patricia folded her arms. “Enforcement discretion.”
Daniel’s eyes stayed on the driver. “If you keep lifting that car, I’ll have you and the board in court before dinner. I’ll call it theft, conversion, and trespass.”
The man’s fingers slid off the control lever. “Boss, I need to see the paperwork.”
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, but he didn’t unlock it yet. He just held it there.
“Read the door,” he said.
The driver frowned, then looked at the black lettering on the truck’s cab. CARTER RECOVERY & TRANSPORT. Below it, the phone number. The logo he passed every shift. He read it twice, then looked at Daniel’s face, then back at the decal.
His shoulders went loose.
“Mr. Carter?” he said.
Daniel gave one small nod.
Marcus scratched the back of his neck and took one step back from the controls. “Oh, hell.”
Patricia’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Marcus lowered the hydraulic arm away from the Porsche’s rear tire.
