Marcus stood between the women and the water.

“This pool is closed for a chemical diagnostic,” he said. “The notice is posted beside the latch. You are on private property.”

Brenda stepped closer, her sandals clicking on the stone. “Sweetheart, we’re conducting an official safety inspection.”

“There is no association easement for private lots,” Marcus said. “You have no legal right of entry.”

Tanya snorted, pushing her sunglasses onto her hair. “You people always make a scene.”

Marcus raised his phone, angling the camera toward them. “I’m recording this.”

Brenda’s eyes narrowed. “You can explain yourself to the board.”

She placed both palms flat against his chest and shoved hard.

Marcus dropped his shoulders and froze, absorbing the blow. His heel caught the edge of a lounger, but he kept his hands open at his sides. He knew how a Black man reacting to a white woman in a suburban yard would look on a distorted neighborhood report. He did not move forward.

“You just committed physical battery on private property,” he said, his voice steady.

“Don’t be dramatic,” Brenda said.

Tanya lunged sideways and slapped the phone out of his grip.

The device clattered across the stone patio, skittering into the drain channel near the pool edge. Marcus did not reach for her. He kept his posture square and his hands open.

Tanya grabbed the blue-bordered towel off the lounge chair—the one Nia had chosen for Maya—and hurled it into the deep end.

It landed with a wet slap, spreading over the cobalt tile beneath the surface.

“Look at that,” Tanya laughed. “It floats.”

Brenda turned toward the steps, her hand brushing her blonde bob behind her ear. “This water is subject to community standards.”

“Do not step into that pool,” Marcus said.

Brenda ignored him and waded straight down the shallow entry steps into the water. Tanya and the brunette associate followed, laughing as the water splashed against their legs.

Brenda spread her arms, turning in a circle near the shallow shelf. “You see any danger, ladies?”

“Looks fine to me,” Tanya said, leaning back against the tile edge with her iced drink.

Marcus bent, picked up his phone from the drain margin, and wiped the grit from its screen with his thumb. The glass was cracked across the corner, but the recording app still showed an active light.

“If you’re going to file a complaint, Marcus, do it through proper channels,” Brenda called out from the pool. Her voice carried over the hum of the idle pump. “Otherwise, stay out of our way.”

Marcus did not reply. He walked to the shaded pergola, unlocked the utility cabinet, and took out the high-intensity ultraviolet inspection lamp.

He turned back to the water. The trap was already set.
