Stripped of Clearance
THE HOA PRESIDENT GRABBED HER BESIDE THE POOL—THEN THE GATE OPENED AGAIN · Capítulo 15
A distant siren rose over the sound of the neighborhood water fountain. Two streets over, the two-tone whine echoed against brick veneers and clean stucco, drawing closer along the boulevard.
Officer Harris did not look up from the soaked flagstones. He extended his right hand toward Karen, palm up and fingers curled in an unmistakable demand.
“Master override key, Mrs. Whitmore. And the board access pass.”
Karen huddled on the pale stone, her knees pulled toward her chest. Water dripped from her chin onto her floral blouse.
“You work for the association,” she croaked. “You report to me.”
“I report to the managing trust,” Harris said. “Keys. Now.”
Her hand shook as she reached into the saturated pocket of her white trousers. A brass cylinder attached to an orange plastic tag hit the officer’s palm with a wet slap. Harris clipped both items to his duty belt beside his radio.
“Township dispatch is three minutes out,” Alicia said from the dry side of the coping.
Harris nodded once, facing Karen. “Per trust protocol, section nine, your site clearance is revoked immediately. You are barred from all administrative facilities, gatehouses, and common property pending legal review.”
“You can’t suspend me,” Karen whispered. Her eyes darted toward the side fence, hearing the siren crest the final corner onto the street. “I live here. I have an elected seat.”
“You have a criminal complaint,” Harris replied. “Stand up.”
Karen pushed against the damp flagstones. Her sandals squeaked against the stone, the foam soles sloshing with trapped water. She tried to catch Alicia’s gaze, looking for a break in her posture, but Alicia merely watched her the way an architect might inspect a cracked tile.
The sirens cut out in the front cul-de-sac. Two car doors thudded shut in rapid succession.
Harris stepped behind Karen, gesturing toward the open side walkway. “Through the gate, Mrs. Whitmore. Officers are waiting at your front bumper.”
Karen did not speak again. She turned her head, rounded her shoulders, and dragged her heavy, sodden trousers across the patio. Each step left an uneven oval of chlorine water, dragging a dark, glistening trail from the pool edge straight out through the gate.
