The chrome drain under Elena’s kitchen sink dripped once every four seconds into an empty tomato can.

The studio smelled of radiator dust and fresh white primer. Outside the third-floor window, the afternoon light slanted gray across the brick fire escapes of the south alley, where an unmarked cruiser from the district attorney’s office sat parked at the curb.

Aaron slid onto his back across the bare pine floorboards, his heavy shoulder blades pressing against the wood.

“Hand me the ten-inch Stillson,” Aaron said.

Elena knelt beside the open cabinet doors. She wore worn denim and a gray sweatshirt with frayed cuffs. She picked the red cast-iron wrench from the canvas tray and slid under the rim of the counter beside him, her shoulder resting against his arm.

“This one?” she asked.

“That’s it.”

She reached up toward the slip nut on the curved PVC trap, her fingers clamped backward across the knurled adjustment ring.

“You’ll strip the threads that way,” Aaron murmured.

He reached up with his right hand. His calloused fingers closed over the back of her hand, stopping her. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat, chin tucking down toward her collarbone.

Aaron did not pull away. Slowly, he shifted her grip, turning her wrist until her thumb braced along the ribbed shank and her knuckles seated flat against the steel handle.

“Push up toward the wall,” he said softly. “Let the teeth bite the brass first.”

“Like that?”

“Just like that. Now lean your weight into it.”

Elena set her jaw. She shoved the wrench upward. The crusty metal ring gave way with a sharp squeak of old grit, loosening two full turns.

A trickle of dark water splashed onto the floor between their elbows. Elena laughed, a short, breathy sound that bounced off the hollow underside of the sink.

“I fixed it,” she whispered.

“You took it apart,” Aaron corrected, his mouth twitching. “Now we put the new washer in.”

Elena didn’t release the handle. Her fingers remained beneath his, warm and steady against the cold iron of the tool, skin pressed to calloused skin on the wet pipe. Neither of them pulled away.
