Linda clicked a green icon on her monitor, then tapped the screen with her index finger. “Sheriff. You need to look at this line right here.”

Kavalik leaned down, placing both hands flat on her desk. His thumbs dragged across the polished laminate, leaving two pale smudges. For three seconds, his jaw stayed shut. Then his breath hitched, quick and thin through his nose.

“That can’t be right,” Kavalik said. His voice lacked its early boom. It sounded like paper tearing in another room.

“It’s tied directly to her father’s state pension account and the county audit registry,” Linda said, her fingers resting light on the keyboard. “When you flagged the serial number as suspected stolen, the system triggered an automatic alert to the state prosecutor’s oversight panel. It logged the stop, the deputy’s ID, and your override timestamp.”

Halverson stepped back until his heels hit the low metal file cabinet. He looked at Kavalik, then down at the blue linoleum floor. “Dale. Did you run her tag on your cruiser pad before you turned your light on?”

Kavalik didn’t answer. The flush on his neck turned dark purple before draining away, leaving his skin grey under the fluorescent lights.

Osei held the brown file folder against his chest with both hands, like a shield. “Sheriff, the state registry lists her late father as retired Chief Master Sergeant Marcus Ashworth. He served twenty-four years on the state governor’s security detail. The motorcycle is registered under a protected family trust.”

Outside the window, the flatbed tow truck sat idling in the sunlight. The driver stood on the pavement with his hands in his pockets, waiting for instructions that no one in the office was ready to give.

Karen didn’t move from her chair. She kept her hands resting flat on her knees, feeling the cool cotton of her riding pants. Her chin stayed level.

“You flagged a protected vehicle without a verified cause,” Linda said, her eyes fixed on the glowing monitor. “The system won’t let us delete the entry. The file is locked, and the notification sent four minutes ago.”

Kavalik looked up from the screen. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He turned toward Karen, his hand dropping away from his holster for the first time all afternoon.

Karen picked up her motorcycle key off the counter and slid it into her pocket.

“I want a printed copy of that alert,” Karen said. “Then I’m going outside to get my bike.”
