The warehouse door stuck, then gave with a scrape that made Elena flinch. Damian pushed it wider with one hand, the other already at his jacket. Marco came in behind them, phone light cutting across concrete and old boxes stacked to the rafters.

The place smelled like wet wood and oil.

“Stay close,” Damian said.

Elena ignored him and went first down the stairs.

The basement room was warmer than the rest of the building. A lamp burned on a crate. A folding table held a cheap teapot, two cups, and a pile of paper folders tied with string. Then Elena saw the little red rain boots by the wall.

Her throat closed.

Sofia sat on a cot in white socks, a stuffed rabbit in her lap. A woman was crouched beside her, one hand on the child’s back.

Bianca looked up slowly.

She was pale in a sweatshirt too big for her, hair pulled back with no makeup, no jewelry except a cheap watch. She looked like someone pulled out of a grave and told to keep breathing.

Elena stopped on the last step.

Sofia turned first. Her face changed at the sight of her, like a hand had hit a switch.

“Ma,” she said, barely above a whisper.

Then she slid off the cot and ran.

Elena dropped to her knees and caught her hard. The rabbit got crushed between them. Sofia clung to her blouse with both fists and buried her face in Elena’s neck.

Bianca stood up too fast and grabbed the table for balance.

Damian did not move. His jaw set once, then went still. “You’ve been alive this whole time.”

Bianca nodded, eyes fixed on the floor.

“I didn’t know where else to take her,” she said. “Carmela said if I ran, she’d finish what she started.”

Elena kept one hand on Sofia’s back and looked at the folders. Names on tabs. Dates. Hospital seals. Her stomach turned.

Bianca swallowed and pointed at the papers.

“She kept copies,” she said. “Birth records. Transfers. The women’s names. She said if anyone ever made trouble, she’d say they were unstable. She kept everything in case she needed to trade.”

Marco went to the table and opened the top folder.

Damian’s phone buzzed once in his hand. He looked at the screen, then at the stairwell above them.

“No one’s supposed to know we’re here,” he said.

Then footsteps sounded upstairs. Slow. Measured. As if whoever was coming had all night.
