The Price of Silence
He Opened the Fence Box to Fix a Short — Then the Police Found a 52-Year-Old County Seal Buried Inside His Neighbor’s Wall · Capítulo 10
Officer Mason Hale wore a faded flannel shirt instead of his county uniform when he knocked on Caleb’s back door.
He carried an olive-drab steel tackle box with a brass latch. He did not ask to sit. He placed the heavy box directly between two ceramic coffee mugs on the kitchen table.
Linda sat beside the window, her hands clasped in her lap.
“My grandfather ran three flatbeds out of Hanover,” Hale said.
Caleb looked at the rusted latch. “Walter Hale.”
“Walter Senior,” Hale said. “My father kept this hidden behind our snowblower.”
Hale flipped the clasp open with his thumb. Inside lay four narrow receipt books bound in black buckram. Yellow carbon copies fluttered under the draft of the kitchen ceiling fan.
Caleb pulled the top ledger closer. The entries were written in hard blue pencil, date after date through October 1975. Each line recorded gate numbers, gallon weights, and cash sums marked for the Brookstone retention pond. The final entry showed twenty thousand dollars paid in two cashier checks.
“He bought eighty acres in Louisa with that money,” Hale said.
Linda stared at the pencil marks. “Gerald kept the matching carbon sheets.”
“My grandfather took the cash,” Hale said. “Neither of them ever called the state.”
Hale pushed the open box toward Linda.
“The state police have the manifests from the park,” Hale said. “Turn this over to Delaney. Let the county attorneys match the numbers.”
