Miriam Shaw’s brownstone smelled like coffee and wet wool. Elena stood in the front room with Sofia on her hip while phones kept buzzing on the table. The TV was on mute. A news crawl kept flashing Sofia’s face, then vanishing.

Miriam took off her glasses and looked over the stack of papers. “We move now. Temporary custody, emergency order, no waiting for a full hearing.”

Damian stood by the window in a dark coat, hands at his sides. “I’m not fighting her.”

Elena shifted Sofia higher. The child had one hand in Elena’s blouse and her cheek pressed to her neck.

“You’ll say that in court,” Miriam said. “And mean it.”

A car horn sounded outside. Then another. Someone shouted on the sidewalk.

By noon, the courthouse steps were packed. Cameras crowded the curb. Elena kept her chin up and her fingers on Sofia’s back. Damian walked beside them without touching her, like he knew better than to crowd her.

Inside, the air was stale and warm. The judge sat behind a high bench, a man with a flat voice and tired eyes. Miriam laid out the DNA report, the Port Authority recorder, the hospital records, the locker bracelet. She did not waste a word.

Elena answered questions with her hands clenched in her lap. When asked why she had been kept from the child, she said, “Because they lied.”

Carmela was not allowed in the room. That was the only mercy in it. But her name still hung over everything.

Damian’s lawyer started in on his claim, then stopped when Damian leaned forward.

“She belongs with her mother,” Damian said. “That’s Elena.”

The judge asked if he was conceding custody.

Damian held the bench in his stare for a second. “I am.”

Sofia turned then, looking from Elena to Damian. Her mouth worked like she was making up her mind. “Daddy,” she said, small and clear.

The room went still.

Damian closed his eyes once. When he opened them, he did not reach for her.

Outside the courtroom, a deputy called Miriam to one side. Elena caught only part of it. Carmela’s people had filed something sealed. Another hearing. Another delay.

Miriam came back with her pen tight in her fist. “We got temporary custody.”

Elena nodded, but her eyes were on the window across the hall.

Carmela stood there in pearls, watching them through the glass, smiling like this was only the first round.
