The motel room smelled like wet carpet and old smoke. Elena stood just inside with her hand at her throat, staring at the bedspread with two burns in it and a lamp that leaned like it had been hit.

Luciana was on the edge of the mattress, her folded hands twisting in her lap. She looked smaller than Elena remembered. “I shouldn’t have left you there,” she said.

Damian shut the door behind them. He didn’t sit. He stayed by the jamb, phone in one hand, jaw set so hard the muscle jumped.

Elena didn’t look away from Luciana. “Start talking.”

Luciana flinched at the flatness in her voice. “Your baby lived. They took her before you woke up.”

Elena’s hand went from her throat to her chest, hard enough to wrinkle her shirt. “Who took her.”

“Carmela knew. The hospital. The doctor. Vance.” Luciana swallowed. “They had a plan. Bianca was meant to disappear. When that changed, they used your child.”

Damian’s fist closed and opened once. “Say it clean.”

Luciana nodded fast. “Your father tried to report the swap. Carlo. He went to the warehouse. They beat him and kept him there until he stopped asking questions.”

Elena made a small sound in her throat, not quite a word. Her knees went loose, and she grabbed the dresser to stay upright.

Luciana reached for her, then stopped herself. “I signed papers. I was scared. I thought if I didn’t, they’d take all of you.”

“You signed my baby away,” Elena said.

“I know.”

The room went quiet except for the ice machine down the hall.

Luciana’s eyes slid toward the window. “There’s more. Records. Names. In the old warehouse on Van Brunt. Carmela kept copies there.”

Damian lifted his phone to his ear. “Marco. Move.”

He listened for a beat, then his face changed. Not fear. Calculation.

“What?” Elena said.

Damian looked at her. “Vance is outside.”

The words landed cold. Before Elena could answer, three hard knocks hit the door. Then another. Then a man’s voice from the hall: “Police. Open up.”
