The Word Cracked
I buried an empty coffin two years ago—then a mafia boss’s silent little girl smelled my perfume, screamed “MAMA,” and exposed the lie that stole my baby. · Capítulo 2
The word cracked through the room. Forks stopped halfway. A man at the bar turned so fast his chair legs scraped the floor. Elena did not move at first. Her tray tipped against her hip. A glass slipped and shattered at her feet.
Damian’s head snapped up. His jaw locked. He looked from Sofia to Elena and back once, like he was measuring a gun in someone’s hand.
“Lock it,” he said.
One of the men by the door hit the deadbolt. Another moved to the front, palm out to the nearest table. The room went tight and quiet in a matter of seconds.
“There are witnesses,” Damian said, still holding Sofia close but shifting her behind his shoulder.
Elena’s throat closed hard enough to hurt. She took one step forward anyway.
Sofia leaned out from Damian’s arm. Her face was wet, her eyes fixed on Elena like she’d been looking for her in a crowd for years. The child reached again, fingers opening and closing.
Elena heard herself say, “Sofia?”
Damian’s stare cut to her. “You know her name.”
“Of course I know her name.” Her hand went to her chest, then dropped. “That’s my baby.”
No one spoke. Even the kitchen noise seemed to pull back.
Damian held still for one beat. Then, with his voice low and flat, he said, “Office. Now.”
Elena looked at the faces around them. A hostess with a phone half-raised. Two couples pretending not to listen. A waiter frozen with a bread basket in both hands.
Damian shifted Sofia higher on his hip and gave Elena a look that was all command and no room.
“Come to the office,” he said. “If this is what I think it is, the whole room just heard enough.”
Sofia made a small sound and pressed her face into his shoulder, never taking her eyes off Elena for long.
Elena wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist and stepped over the broken glass.
Damian opened the office door and stood aside, but his hand stayed on the frame like he was closing a vault.
