The courthouse hallway smelled like floor wax and damp coats. Daniel came out of the courtroom with his hands in his pockets and saw Patricia before she saw him, standing near a vending machine in a gray suit that fit better than the last one. She had no blazer now. No board table. No binder. Just a stack of papers under one arm and a look that had gone flat.

She turned when she heard his steps.

“Mr. Carter,” she said.

“Patricia.”

Her mouth tightened. “I was trying to protect the neighborhood.”

Daniel stopped beside a bench and tapped his knuckles once on the metal armrest. “No,” he said. “You were trying to protect your seat.”

She lifted her chin. “You don’t understand how these communities work.”

“I do.”

A woman from records rolled a cart past them and kept going. Somewhere down the hall, a copier clanked. Daniel looked at Patricia’s papers, then back at her face.

“The neighborhood needed protection,” he said. “From people who forgot the difference between leadership and ownership.”

That hit. It showed in the way her shoulders went still, even before she answered.

“You think this is over?” she said.

“For you, it is.”

He didn’t say it loud. He didn’t need to.

Patricia’s fingers tightened on the stack. For a second she looked like she might say something sharp, something that would matter in a room with ten neighbors and a microphone. But the hallway had no audience left for her. Just Daniel, the fluorescent lights, and the echo of shoes on tile.

He gave her a small nod and walked on.
