The thirty-foot walnut table held nine bound copies of the audit report. Daniel Reyes folded his manicured hands flat against the wood. Beside him, Rebecca Collins sat straight, her chin raised, though her eyes remained fixed on the slate wall across the room.

“The findings show systematic suppression,” Daniel said, his parliamentary cadence filling the quiet space. “The committee moves for immediate termination for cause.”

Director Vance, sitting three chairs down, cleared his throat with a raspy cough. “Her profit margins reached twelve percent,” Vance said. “We risk market backlash.”

Rebecca checked the dial of her Swiss wristwatch. The heavy silver band clicked against the table edge. “The numbers speak for themselves,” she said, her voice clipped. “I built this balance sheet.”

Logan turned the plain wedding band on his left hand. He looked at the nine directors before he spoke.

“A company is not a balance sheet,” Logan said softly.

Marcus Pruitt adjusted his silk tie from his seat behind the observers’ row, chuckling under his breath to test the room’s reaction. Nobody joined him.

“Competence without character corrupts an institution,” Logan said. He looked directly at Rebecca. “Fear replaced listening here. That cost is higher than any quarterly margin.”

“You act out of personal grievance,” Rebecca said, cutting him off.

“I act on thirty recorded interviews,” Logan replied. “And three independent audits.”

Daniel raised his right hand. “All those in favor of the motion.”

Logan raised his hand first. One by one, six other directors lifted theirs. Vance hesitated, looked at the thick folder on his desk, and raised his palm. Rebecca remained frozen, her fingernails digging into the leather armrests.

“The motion carries,” Daniel announced. He struck his pen against the pad.

The room remained silent as the meeting adjourned, leaving Rebecca alone in her high-backed chair.
