Karen had one hand on the tile wall and the other on the coping. Water ran from her sleeves in thin streams. Her floral blouse clung to her ribs, and wet hair hung across her eyes in strands.

Alicia stood where the dry patio ended and the blue pool began.

Karen wiped her eyes with her sleeve. The metal clipboard floated three feet away, one corner dipping under the blue surface. Her flat sandal turned slowly nearby, sole to sky.

“You had no right,” Karen said. Her voice came out thin. “You put hands on me.”

Alicia did not move. She looked down at her without hurry.

“I’m calling the board,” Karen said, coughing once. “I’ll have you cited for assault.”

Alicia’s gaze stayed level. A light breeze moved across the patio and touched the towel on the lounger. It lifted one folded corner and let it fall flat again.

Karen took in the quiet scene. The lounger. The glass of water. The dry towel. Her jaw worked.

“This neighborhood has rules,” Karen said.

“It does,” Alicia said.

“You think because you own a pool you can ignore the board?”

“No.”

Alicia’s hands rested loose at her sides. Her posture did not shift. She was not bracing. She was not retreating.

That was the first detail that made Karen go still.

The second was the sound from beyond the wooden fence. Heavy boots hit gravel outside the side passage, closing in four measured steps.

Karen turned her head toward the gate. Alicia did not.

The latch clicked and the gate pushed inward. A man in a dark uniform stepped onto the patio with a radio clipped to his shoulder. He stopped when his eyes found Karen half in the pool.

Then he looked past her to Alicia on the stone deck. He straightened his spine.

“Ms. Bennett,” he said.

Karen’s head snapped toward Alicia.

The guard came two steps closer. “I got your call. You wanted a trespasser handled?”

Karen’s mouth opened, then shut. “What are you doing? I’m the one who called. She attacked me.”

The guard did not look down at the water. His attention stayed on Alicia.

“Tell me,” Alicia said, her voice low, “who sent you?”

“Dispatch from Bennett Property Group,” the guard said.

Karen froze. The words hung in the warm air.

“And what do you know about this address?” Alicia asked.

“This site is under contract with your firm,” the guard said. “The board cannot enter without approval from management.”

Karen’s face went pale. “That’s not right.”

“Ma’am,” the guard said to Karen, “you are on private property. You are in violation of access rules.”

Karen looked from him to Alicia and back again. “No. She’s just a homeowner. I’m the board president.”

The guard addressed Alicia. “Ms. Bennett, do you want me to document the trespass?”

Karen stared at him. The name hit her late, but it hit. Her wet fingers slipped an inch on the tile edge.

“Yes,” Alicia said.

The guard unhooked his radio. “Ma’am,” he said to Karen, “stay where you are until I finish the report.”

Alicia looked down at the pale, dripping face in the water.

“Don’t move,” Alicia said.

Karen blinked at her, silent at last.
