The Surprise Inspection
THE HOA PRESIDENT DEMANDED ACCESS TO HER PRIVATE POOL — THEN THE SECURITY GUARD SAW WHO WAS STANDING BESIDE IT · Capítulo 2
The shadow blocked the afternoon sun, casting a long outline across the blue canvas of Alicia’s lounger.
A woman marched across the flagstones toward the water. Her floral blouse flared in the dry breeze with orange and fuchsia patterns. She held a metal clipboard against her ribs, a thick stack of paper clipped to its top silver latch. Her white capri pants appeared bright against the patio stone, and her flat sandals slapped hard against the deck with every step.
“We have an unannounced safety inspection today,” the woman said.
She offered no name, greeting, or formal introduction. She barked the sentence like a command. She stopped three feet from the lounger, positioning her body at the coping edge between the chair and the pool. She lifted a black pen, pointing the sharp tip straight down at Alicia’s turquoise bikini.
“Present your property permit immediately,” she said.
Alicia did not flinch. She kept her head back against the cushion, watching a faint ripple cross the clear surface of the pool water. The sun burned warm on her shoulders. She let five seconds pass in complete silence, refusing to act startled by the invasion of her private backyard.
Then Alicia sat up. She moved without a single hint of rush or urgency. She swung her legs over the side of the lounger, planting her feet flat on the flagstones three feet from the pool coping. She rested her palms on her lap, sitting straight and calm in her swimwear.
“You reached over my gate to pull the inner latch,” Alicia said.
“The board holds entry rights for urgent assessments,” the woman said.
She thrust the metal board forward. The aluminum corner stopped two inches from the glass of water sitting on Alicia’s side table. The paper stack fluttered in the mild wind.
“Unregistered water features create financial liability for every home on this street,” the woman said. “I require access to your pump housing right now.”
“You are on private land,” Alicia said.
“Not when community rules are broken,” the woman snapped. She planted her sandals wide on the patio stone. “I am Karen Whitmore. I serve as president of this board. I do not need an invitation.”
Karen pressed her pen tip into the top page of her clipboard. Her chin rose two inches, her face set with the expectation of immediate submission. She waited for Alicia to cover her shoulders with a towel, apologize for the locked gate, or scramble inside to search for permits.
Alicia stayed seated on the chair. She took in the floral blouse, the clipboard, and the rigid stance of the woman towering over her deck.
Alicia lifted her right hand toward her face. Her finger and thumb took hold of the dark frame resting on her nose.
Slowly, with a single hand, Alicia removed her sunglasses and folded them closed, meeting Karen’s stare with an unblinking glare.
