A Shift in Rank
THE HOA PRESIDENT GRABBED HER BESIDE THE POOL—THEN THE GATE OPENED AGAIN · Capítulo 12
Water sloshed against the stone coping as Karen kicked her white capris in the deep end. Her floral shirt clung to her ribs in heavy folds, dragging her down like an anchor.
“Officer, detain her!” Karen gasped, spitting pool water. “Look at my clipboard!”
The guard took three steady paces along the edge. His tactical belt creaked with each stride. A radio clipped to his chest crackled with static, the indicator light pulsing against the dark fabric.
Karen reached an arm out, wet fingers clawing at the cuff of his trousers. “Pull me up, Miller. Cuff her now.”
Officer Miller stepped over her hand. His rubber sole came down four inches past her red knuckles, leaving a tread mark on the pale stone. He did not extend an arm. He did not lower his eyes to the surface of the pool.
“Miller!” Karen shrieked, chlorinated water splashing across her chin. “I am talking to you!”
The officer halted two feet from Alicia. He took off his peaked cap with his right hand, tucking it under his left elbow. His posture stiffened into parade rest, heels together, shoulders pulling back until the seams of his shirt strained.
Alicia stood motionless beside the dry lounger, arms loose at her sides. The red imprint of Karen’s fingers darkened on her bare tricep.
Miller’s eyes dropped to the bruise, then rose to Alicia’s face.
“Are you injured, ma’am?” he asked.
“I am fine,” Alicia said.
Behind him, Karen flailed against the tile line, collapsed hair hanging in strings over her eyes. “Are you blind, Miller? She pushed the board president!”
Miller kept his back turned to the water. He reached for the pen in his breast pocket with unhurried precision, ignoring the sputtering woman behind him.
“Corporate headquarters notified our gatehouse forty minutes ago,” Miller said. “Director Bennett, chief legal counsel for the development trust.”
