The echo of Alicia’s voice died against the stucco walls. Karen stayed frozen in the pool, her knuckles white where she gripped the pale coping stone. The only sound was the steady drip of chlorinated water from her floral sleeve onto the flagstones below.

A single sheet from the clipboard drifted face-up near the skimmer opening, its black text smearing into gray ink clouds.

Alicia did not move. She kept her hands loose at her sides, three feet from the edge, watching Karen struggle to breathe through her nose. The bright midday sun pressed down on the wet stones, baking the thin film of pool water into steam.

Karen’s chin trembled. Her mouth opened, then snapped shut, teeth clicking against each other.

Then, beyond the cedar fence, rubber soles slammed hard against the gravel access path.

The sound moved fast. Heavy, rhythmic strides struck the stone pavers on the narrow side walkway, followed by the metallic jingle of a loaded duty belt. Keys clinked against a baton ring with every jarring stride.

Karen’s head snapped toward the sound. The fear in her watery eyes vanished, replaced by an ugly flare of triumph.

“You’re finished,” Karen whispered. Her voice shook, but the sharp spite had returned to her jaw. “Do you hear that? I called patrol from my car before I came through that gate. I told them I had a hostile tenant refusing an audit.”

Alicia did not glance toward the gate. Her pulse stayed slow in her wrists.

“You called them,” Alicia said.

“They have full trespass authority,” Karen spat, kicking her sodden legs to keep her chin above the water line. A fresh wave slapped the tile trim. “I had them log the call at the main kiosk. Resisting board compliance. Failure to grant access. And now you put your hands on me.”

The steps cleared the corner of the house. A heavy palm hit the outside of the fence, steadying a runner on the tight turn.

“Officer!” Karen screamed toward the fence line, her throat raw from the chlorine. “In here! I’m around back! She assaulted me!”

Alicia took one measured breath, keeping her eyes fixed on the gate latch.

The silver bar lifted with a sharp, familiar snap. The cedar gate swung hard against the outer wall, vibrating on its hinges, framing a broad man in a dark community security uniform.
